Let Girls Learn

Mar 4, 2015

As part of the U.S. government’s commitment to girls’ education, a new collaboration between First Lady Michelle Obama and the U.S. Peace Corps called Let Girls Learn will work to expand access to education for girls worldwide. Although we know educating girls creates healthy communities, 62 million girls around the world do not attend school and barriers for adolescent girls are particularly challenging. In Togo, only 69% of adolescent females complete primary school.

Let Girls Learn will train Peace Corps Volunteers and local counterparts to create sustainable solutions to make it easier for girls to attend school. This will be accomplished by “working hand in hand with communities on projects through a new Let Girls Learn Fund, and increasing the number of Volunteers working to break down barriers to girls’ education in the communities they serve.”

The Let Girls Learn collaboration will start this year in 11 countries: Albania, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Georgia, Ghana, Moldova, Mongolia, Mozambique, Togo, and Uganda. HTH is thrilled that Togo is a pilot country in this important initiative to increase girls’ access to education. We hope to work with Let Girls Learn and help adolescent girls to receive high quality education and break the cycle of poverty.
