UN member states reach new agreement on sustainable development agenda

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressing a press conference in New York.

Following the UN’s recent celebration of the success of its Millennium Development Goals initiative, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced a new set of development goals agreed upon by 193 member states. The broad scope of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) ranges from eliminating extreme poverty to providing universal healthcare and education to combating climate change and habitat destruction. This new post-2015 agenda contains 9 more goals than the previous agenda, which culminated last month.

The UN crafted the “to-do list” while keeping the ideas of universality in mind.  The goals outlined in this agenda are more ambitious and clear than in the past, but are also broad and holistic because they take into account the differing realities and capabilities of each country. The UN aims to eliminate poverty and facilitate sustainable development through an upstream approach by specifically addressing the root reasons why people live in poverty. These SDGs will be formally adopted by member states at a special UN summit in New York in September.

Hope Through Health is happy to see the continuation of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals agenda. We will continue to work with our local partner AED-Lidaw and the Togolese Ministry of Health in order to fortify the healthcare system in Togo. Our ultimate goal is to create a substantial improvement in health outcomes and overall quality of life of Togolese citizens!
