While access to maternity care in sub-Saharan Africa has improved, women are still confronting malnutrition and a lack of access to prenatal and emergency care. Women in sub-Saharan Africa are fifty times more likely to die from childbirth than women in high-income countries, according to a 2019 UNICEF report, and their babies are ten times more likely to die in their first month of life. The region has the highest maternal mortality rate in the world.
