The first-ever Universal Health Coverage Day is being celebrated across the globe with the help of over 500 international partners. Two years ago on December 12, 2012, the United Nations unanimously passed a resolution calling for universal health coverage with the idea that every person has “the right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health,” regardless of factors such as gender, race, economic or social condition, etc. Access to quality healthcare is a basic right that has implications far beyond the well-being of individuals. Implementation of international health systems may hold the key to combating diseases while simultaneously transforming communities, economies, and nations for the better.
