Togo’s National AIDS Program recently released an addendum to its 2013 report, highlighting Hope Through Health’s partner organization Association Espoir pour Demain (AED-Lidaw) as an outstanding HIV/AIDS organization in the Kara region of Togo. Six health organizations were profiled in the report, one for each region of Togo and one for the capital city of Lomé. French speakers are encouraged to read the addendum here. In 2001, AED-Lidaw was formed by a group people living with HIV/AIDS who were frustrated by the lack of support available to them. In 2004, AED-Lidaw joined together with U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers to found Hope Through Health in an effort to provide HIV care and treatment services in northern Togo, where these services were not yet available. Over the past 10 years, AED-Lidaw and HTH have built a community-driven healthcare delivery system that provides comprehensive care to over 1,700 patients living with HIV/AIDS. In 2009, the National AIDS Program accredited AED/HTH’s center in Kara as an antiretroviral (ARV) distribution site, allowing more of our patients to easily access medication. Over 900 patients are currently taking life-saving ARV medication. Three years later, in 2012, the Kara center was accredited as a voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) site and a family planning site. These accreditations have enabled AED/HTH to provide more effective, efficient care to its patients. With over 40 staff, 99% of whom are Togolese, and 50% of whom are living with HIV, AED/HTH is able to offer comprehensive HIV services to a growing patient population. HTH is proud to partner with AED-Lidaw. We are consistently inspired by their drive to better serve their community and we look forward to another 10 years of partnership.
